What's happening?

The Weekend Wanders are when boats get together and, with the sage advice of one of our experienced sailors, head off to stay overnight at locations in Port Phillip. You will be sleeping aboard either your own yacht one of the member's yachts. WYC Members without a boat will be allocated to a boat once you have registered.  For our September trip we'll be getting together on Saturday morning at 10am.

Who's invited?

All WYC members are encouraged to join in.  WYC members without a boat, please register early so we can match you to a boat/skipper. Boat matching, equipment loans etc. only apply to WYC members.

We also welcome boat owners from other clubs to join us as well. Please register so we know you are coming and we have some contact details so we can look out for you and particularly if you would like some extra crew for the trip.

Anyone bringing their own boat, WYC member or not, it is free to bring any of your friends and family along, even if they are not WYC members.

How does it work?

The club will have an experienced person assigned to organise the sailing on the day including checking the weather, briefing the skippers etc. Prior to the event those who have registered will be matched into crews so that we have the right mix of experience for each boat and the skipper is happy.

What do I wear and bring?

The best rule for sailing is to assume its going to be colder than it is ashore and if the sun is about, you need sunscreen even in winter.

For clothing, layers are best for warmth including a top layer which is wind proof. A cap, beret or beany will keep your head warm and gloves will help keep your hands warm as well as provide grip and protection for handling ropes. The club has access to a small supply of sail gear for novices so please don't hesitate to ask.

By law, there must be a lifejacket for each person and Wyndham Yacht Club recommends you wear an inflatable type at all times while engaged in sailing and moving around the deck. These are easy to wear and do not hamper movement. Talk to Robert at the next club night if you would like advice on acquiring your own.

Once you've been allocated to a boat you can get organised with the rest of the crew to see who's bring what in the way of food and drink.

I can sail but I don't have a boat?

If you don't have your own boat but would like a bit more independence then you could consider using one of the club's Columbia 22s, Rose of Wyndham or James of Wyndham.  The boats are provided and maintained by our Training Supporter "Sail Escapade" so once you have passed the competency assessment you can be on your way whenever it takes your fancy.
