What's happening?
WYC's version of twilight sailing. Our program is less racing oriented and more participation oriented. There will be points awarded for participation, special efforts and social media engagement and more, followed by a BBQ on the boardwalk. The sailing course will be designed to keep everyone comfortable but still have a pleasant sail. A bit of fun to end the week.
Who's invited?
All WYC members are encouraged to join in, please register using the book now button.
For WYC members without a boat, please register early so we can match you to a boat/skipper.
Any WYC member bringing your own boat, you can also bring any of your friends and family along, even if they are not WYC members.
For boat matching, equipment loan etc. make sure to register early - early seagulls get their pick of the boats.
How does it work?
The club will have an experienced person assigned to organise the sailing course and keep an eye on the weather. Prior to the event, those who have registered will be matched into crews so that we have the right mix of experience for each boat and the skipper is happy. For each Friday Flit the skippers will assemble at the BBQ for their starting and course instructions no later than 5:45. Actual start times are determined by boat with the smaller boats starting first and the bigger faster boats starting later.
While the event is not a race as such, there are points for sailing well so best be on your toes when the boat is underway. The winner is determined on a points calculation with points awarded for participation of club members, size of the boat (smaller boat, more points), facebook posts, novelty item of the day, position at the finish and more. Boats will start in reverse order of length with the smaller boats starting first eg. the Rose of Wyndham (22ft) might start first with Escapade (38 ft) starting 16 minutes (1 minute per foot) later and Blunderbuss (41ft) starting 3 minutes after Escapade etc.
What do I wear and bring?
The best rule for sailing is to assume its going to be colder than it is ashore. For clothing, layers are best for warmth including a top layer which is wind proof. A cap, beret or beany will keep your head warm and gloves will help keep your hands warm as well as provide grip and protection for handling ropes. The club has access to a small supply of sail gear for novices so please don't hesitate to ask particularly for gloves and overalls to keep your bottom half warm and dry.
By law, there must be a lifejacket on board each boat for each person and Wyndham Yacht Club recommends your wear an inflatable type at all times while engaged in sailing and moving around the deck. They are easy to wear and do not hamper movement. Talk to Robert at the next club night if you would like advice on acquiring your own.
As for what else to bring, most skippers appreciate a "boarding pass" which for a Friday Flit might take the form of a bottle of wine, six pack of beer, box of chocolates or something to munch on for happy hour depending on the weather or making sure they are well supplied at the "after party". If you are using one of the club's Columbia 22s then that's all covered in the $20 maintenance contribution.
